COLOR WASHING
J's Designs - Faux Color Washing

Color Washing is one of the fastest and softest finishes to do. You can do an average sized room in about an hour. Consider doing multiple colour washes, but only cover a portion of the wall with the initial colors.

RECIPE

Step One: Apply two coats of Ralph Lauren Acrylic Satin finish tinted to WH01D Tennis Court White. Let paint dry for several hours.

Step Two: Most any glaze or latex varnish can be used to do this technique, including Ralph Lauren Technique Glaze, Pratt and Lambert Latex Glaze, Pratt and Lambert Oil Glaze, Polyvine Scumble and Polyvine Classic Colour Effects. J's Designs will tint Ralph Lauren Technique Glaze and Pratt and Lambert Latex and Oil Glazes for you, otherwise mix your glaze in the ratio of 5 parts glaze: 1 part Accolade Velvet mixed to #2081 Ginger Whip and #2257 Shadow Beige. For a more subtle finish, add more glaze to the mixture.

Step Three: Pour your glaze mixture into a paint tray or deep pail. You can use a sea sponge, cellulose sponge, cotton rags, or a paint mitt. You will need your application tool moistened to begin. Apply product to your tool by dipping it in the mixture. Beginning in a corner and working in medium size sections, rub the mixture into the wall in a circular motion (for a clouded, non-directional effect). If you are using a glaze which dries quickly try to make the edges of your section disappear.

Step Four: Soften any texture marks with a hog hair softener, soft bristle brush, or soft cloths.

Step Five: If you are working with a quick drying glaze, work the next section up to, but not overlapping the previous one, otherwise, work the next section into the one previous. Continue until surfaces are complete.

Step Six: Repeat steps three through five with second glaze color.
