MARBLE
J's Designs - Faux Marble

Creating the look and feel of marble is one of the most difficult to master. To get your feet wet, here is a recipe that is nearly fool proof.

RECIPE

Step One: Apply two coats of Pratt and Lambert Accolade Velvet Finish tinted Black. Let paint dry for several hours.

Step Two: Brush a thin coat of Polyvine Acrylic Scumble across entire surface. Add phthalo green (90%), raw umber (5%), and black (5%) universal tint to the Acrylic Scumble. Rag tinted glaze over 80-90% of the surface using pre-moistened cotton sheeting.

Step Three: Add a small amount of white glaze to the green glaze to make a glaze a tone lighter. Rag this over 60-70% of the surface.

Step Four: Add more white glaze to the green glaze for a tone lighter once again. Using a feather moistened with a bit of water, pick up the coloured glaze on the side of the feather that curves downward. Lay the side of the feather on the surface and push it into and across the surface, shaking the feather slightly every now and then. Use angles that reflect each other, but are just slightly different.

Step Four: Soften with a badger hair softening brush.

Step Five: Using the lightest colored glaze, draw in tiny veins with a #2 sable writer. They should form off of the larger veins.

Step Six: Overglaze the marble with either the darkest green glaze, or a raw umber glaze.

Step Seven: Seal with a gloss acrylic varnish.
